Stoat (Mustela erminea) Sightings and Image at Burton Mere Wetlands:

Hi All,

Finally managed to get a shot of the Stoat (Mustela erminea) that is seen reguLarly near the barn on Burton Mere Wetlands RSPB Reserve. Other mammals seen here in the recent past have included Fox, Brown Hare and Wood Mouse.

Hi Steve,

I have been having a problem trying to get my records submitted into RODIS. All the fields are filled in but I still get an error message and it states 'try again later'.

Cheers,
Harry

Hi Harry,

I use RODIS every single day and have now put in over 250,000 records through it so I know its foibles quite well. Sadly, I have never had the message you quote.

So, can I ask you to try again and let me know 'exactly' how you go. Are you able to log-in to RODIS and get to the Recording Folder screen ?? Can you choose a file and open it to get to the data entry screen (Species, Location, Date, Abundance, Sex/Stage, etc., etc. ?? Does the message only come up when you click the "Add Record" button ?? Can you write down the 'exact' text of the message and is it in a red box ??

I would very much like to get you past this 'hump' and using RODIS easily and as often as possible.

Cheers,
Steve

Hi Steve,

I can get as far as entering the record into the data fields. When I click 'Add Record' I get a message in a pink box with a smaller box with OK inside.

The message reads: Error - Record cannot be added to submitted file.

Cheers,
Harry

Hi Harry,

Thank you Harry - NOW I understand and can tell you what is happening !!!

In RODIS, when you submit a file, it is locked so that the records can be taken out and applied to the Main Database (Recorder-6). If the file were not to be locked then people could edit the records and they would no longer match the 'copy' on the Main Database.

So, the easiest thing to do is, when you first open RODIS it shows you the 'Recording Folder' window and here you can 'Create a New File'. If you create a new file and then open it it WILL allow you to enter your records ! I usually create 3 or 4 files per month and 'Submit' them when they have somewhere between 150 and 500 records in them. This keeps them relatively small and easy to handle as well as loading quicker when I want to add further records.

Once a file has been 'Submitted' it can no longer be either edited OR added to.

I hope that helps Harry - if you get stuck then please do shout - I am always ready to help if I can.

Cheers and take care.

Hi Steve,

I have overcome the problem by doing as you say. I had been trying to enter the Stoat record into my Mammal file so in the end I created a new file, in this case Dee Estuary Wildllife.

In the future I will create new files if and when needed.

Thanks for your patience.

Cheers,
Harry
