The First 'Black' Grey Squirrel Sighting ??

Post by Julia »

The First 'Black' Grey Squirrel Sighting for Halton :-

Yesterday afternoon (Thursday 17th September 2009 at 15:30) I noticed some commotion and looking out of the window saw 2 Grey Squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) which were quite obviously perturbed. On looking further I noticed another Grey Squirrel apparently 'fighting' what at first I took to be a black cat.

Further observation showed this 'cat' to actually be a 'Black' Grey Squirrel - one of the melanistic mutants that have been around in Southern England for quite some time.

As far as I am aware this is the 'first' sighting of a black mutant Grey Squirrel in Cheshire and is certainly the first time I have seen one in Halton (Halton Common (SJ54038215)).

I would be very interested to hear from other observers of these 'black' squirrels - has anyone else seen any in Cheshire so far ??
