The Pine Marten in Cheshire

Post by RichardMuirhead »

Have there been any sightings of the Pine Marten (Martes martes) in Cheshire in the last 60 years ?

There is a record from the Macclesfield/Rainow area from the nineties - don't know the details...

Richard,

There are 16 records of Pine Marten (Martes martes) on the rECOrd database (see map below). For more detail please contact the rECOrd staff directly (see the Contacts page of the website). The most recent record for Cheshire that is held on the database appears to be about 1931 with most in the late 1800s. So it would appear we do not have the record which Anno mentions (any chance of getting hold of it for RODIS Anno ?).

Hi Steve - the record actually comes from a data search - on RODIS! but the Mammals of Cheshire book also contains an entry from Cuddington in 2000, these would, i think, have come via The Vincent Wildlife Trust who started to record this species in 1989.

the last specimen was shot on the Eaton estate that we have a positive for - 7th July 1891 - still in Grosvenor Museum Chester and the Trust have a record of 10 since the survey began.

As a species this is generally regarded as become extinct in Britain prior to the first World War.
