Wintering Blackcaps

Wintering Blackcaps:

Over the last few winters I have been fortunate enough to have regular visits by Blackcaps to the bird table in my Great Sutton garden. They normally arrive towards the end of November and leave during the first or second week in April.

This winter has been particularly good, and up to the last few weeks I have had mostly females visiting. One of them had a metal leg ring and this individual was seen over a period of at least two months.

Recently however I am seeing more males than females and the attached photo was taken on 14/03/2014. On that day I also saw 2 females.

I have not been able to see any evidence that some birds arrive as immature males, which then show a change of head colour as the winter progresses.

Mel.
