Two Red Admirals (Vanessa atalanta) Today:

Nice and sunny and warm in the garden today (Sun 30th October 2011) and lots of activity around the Ivy (Hedera helix). Bees, drone flies, bluebottles, green bottles, 2 Harlequin Ladybirds (Harmonia axyridis), wasps and the best of all two Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) butterflies.

For the other flies and wasps and bees I'd have to kill them, pin them, peer at them through a microscope and get keys for them and eventually identify them; sorry I haven't the time and I don't want to go on a killing spree today!

Just seen a Red Admiral on the ivy in the garden, latest butterfly I've ever seen.

Although I don't like killing things to ID them I have great respect for people who have the patience and perseverance to ID things and create records.
