These two have us foxed - we think that they are both Double Square Spot or Triple-spotted Clay. Does anyone have any tips on how to differentiate these similar species please?
Any help would be gratefully received
Spotted....but what sort?
Re: Spotted....but what sort?
These are both Double Square-spots. Triple-spotted Clay appears to be more or less restricted to Delamere and the Wirral, whereas Double Square-spot is common and widespread throughout. If you think you might have a Triple-spotted Clay then it'll be another Double Square-spot, as Triple-spotted Clay is distinctive when you see it.
These comparisons might help.

Re: Spotted....but what sort?
That's really helpful Steve...
I can't put it to any use however as I've yet to trap either this year!
Cheers,
Steve
