Gold Spot or Lempke's:

Is this a Lempke's or just a Gold Spot ?

Hi Steve,

Not having ever seen Lempke's myself I'd bow to those in the east who have but given the time of year and its appearance I'd say it was in with a decent shout. Can't really judge shortness of wing from the photo unfortunately.

Have a look at Tom Tams photos on the Northumberland Moth Group which illustrate the differences in the two Gold Spots:

Steve's moth is Lempke's, which is to be expected in East Cheshire at this time of year. The only record from West Cheshire was of one caught at Bromborough in 2006 which may well have been blown across from Wales.

Many thanks Steve and yes I was looking at Toms site last night. It's my second one in Cheshire. I caught one a couple years ago in Stoneyfold wood Bosley.
