Elm Leaf Mines

Post by bobhelencoan »

Elm Leaf Mines:

Three mines we need help to ID.

1. Gallery mine along the edge of a leaf.
2. A thin gallery following veins, the egg was on the underside.
3. Blotch mine on the upper surface of the leaf.

As always any help much appreciated.

Not sure what made your blotch but with the Stigmella mines you need to work out which side of the leaf the larva vacated. The larva makes a cut in the shape of a crescent in which it vacates the leaf. This is very obvious at the tip of your vein gallery mine. Hold the leaf horizontally up to the light and look across it to get the best view of the arched cut. This should be clear on one side only as the other should still be intact. Often hard to see as the mine wears but looks like it should be possible on your vein gallery mine.

Regards,
Steve
