Alder Mines:
A few leaf mines on Alder along Whitehall Brook, Mottram St. Andrew on 15th September 2017:
Note the emergence hole where the larva has vacated the mine is on the upperside of the leaf, whereas both Stigmella species on alder vacate from the underside of the mine.
The larva makes this silvery mine in the early instar. It then feeds inside a rolled leaf.
Note the main central crease.
No central crease. A long mine, often starting from the midrib and extending to the leaf edge
There is often a reddish spot in the angle where the midrib meets the main vein.
No central crease and mine much shorter than Phyllonorycter froelichiella. Larva white.
On the upper surface of the leaf.

Steve
