That was my suggestion but the recorder said it was smaller than those he has been catching.

I would have assumed the same family as both Clive and yourself. I don't want to confuse the issue but it is possible that the moth is just smaller than normal.
This year I have recorded several 'small' moths and I have attached an image of a Garden Carpet as an example. According to my literature this species has a wing length of 13-16mm.
