Last Two NFY

Post by Greg »

Last Two NFY:

Morning All,

26 moths of 11 species last night, including 12 Straw Dots, 1 Red-line Quaker, 1 Yellow-line Quaker,
1 Figure of Eight, 1 Angle Shades, 1 Black Rustic, 1 Snout, 3 Red-green Carpets, 3 Light Brown Apple Moths,
also NFY 1 Feathered Thorn and a Female December Moth (pics below).

I'm not expecting any more species for this year, maybe a Scarce Umber, or if I'm lucky an unusual migrant.
So that takes my Cheshire Species list for the Year up to 341.

My previous best was 286. Also, numbers have been way up on the previous 3 years I've been mothing, with 6 species over 100, 3 species over 200, 2 species over 300, 550 Straw Dots and 1147 Large Yellow Underwings.

So, a good years mothing for me including 41 lifers overall.
Roll on 2018.

Greg

Hi Greg,

Nothing like those numbers here in Elton last night, with just 11 moths of seven species. However, NFY were Yellow-line Quaker and Feathered Thorn, taking the year to date to 301.

This is better by far than last years' 279 but still a far cry from the 360 in 2014. My top 20 in terms of most numerous is below. All a bit sad apart from the first named. 'Common Rustic' will be relegated to 'agg' of course.

I thought I'd have a look back at the good old days, so here's the top 20 from 1992...

Horrifying to think that we've trapped less moths all year in 2017 than the total for just Heart & Dart back then. The average number of moths over 80 trap sessions then was 175 as opposed to this years 57 from 74 sessions ......

Cheers,
Steve

Hi Steve,

I'm glad I've only just recently started mothing. If, like you, I'd experienced the dramatic decline of moths over
the last couple of decades, my figures would have been demoralizing. Which makes me more determined
to get out and see as many species as possible and do my bit to try and stabilize the present populations before they disappear for good.

Regards,
Greg
