Heliozela sericiella Mines On Oak

Post by SteveH »

Heliozela sericiella Mines On Oak:

Hi Folks,

After an unspectacular trapping session overnight (Large Wainscot and Silver Y) spent the morning local patching and came across an Oak which to my eyes has been mined by Heliozela sericiella.

Hi Folks,

Since finding these for the first time a few days ago I've subsequently found them at three further sites. This either means they have had a good year or that I just have my eye in now !

Cheers,
Steve

I never find these easy to locate and have only found them on a couple of occasions this year. Both times on the ground below Oaks during the summer. As the larva mines the petiole, the leaf becomes less firmly attached to the tree and is often one of the first leaves to be blown off the tree, so looking below Oaks before the leaves normally start to fall, will occasionally reveal a Heliozela sericiella mine.

Regards,
Steve
