New For Garden - 2017

New For Garden - 2017:

As the year winds down, I thought I'd check how many new species for my Bromborough garden I've recorded during 2017. I knew there were quite a few, but I was surprised to find it was as many as 41 species !

Acronicta rumicis (Knot Grass)
Aethalura punctulata (Grey Birch)
Agonopterix nervosa
Agrotis ipsilon (Dark Sword-grass)
Agrotis segetum (Turnip Moth)
Ancylis achatana
Anthophila fabriciana
Argyresthia brockeella
Argyresthia conjugella (Apple Fruit Moth)
Argyresthia trifasciata
Bucculatrix thoracella
Calamotropha paludella
Caloptilia stigmatella
Catocala nupta (Red Underwing)
Cidaria fulvata (Barred Yellow)
Coleophora albicosta
Conistra ligula (Dark Chestnut)
Cydia pomonella (Codling Moth)
Deilephila elpenor (Elephant Hawk-moth)
Dryobotodes eremita (Brindled Green)
Epiblema foenella
Epinotia bilunana
Epinotia rubiginosana
Eupithecia inturbata (Maple Pug)
Furcula furcula (Sallow Kitten)
Helcystogramma rufescens
Hepialus humuli (Ghost Moth)
Laspeyria flexula (Beautiful Hook-tip)
Lateroligia ophiogramma (Double Lobed)
Luperina testacea (Flounced Rustic)
Mesoligia furuncula (Cloaked Minor)
Mompha jurassicella
Mythimna ferrago (Clay)
Nematopogon schwarziellus
Nematopogon swammerdamella
Notocelia rosaecolana
Panolis flammea (Pine Beauty)
Phycita roborella
Scrobipalpa costella
Smerinthus ocellata (Eyed Hawk-moth)
Udea prunalis

This brings my garden total to 344, excluding aggregate species and non-confirmed IDs. This is over 4 years trapping. Not sure if it's a high, low or medium total for the area, but I'm pretty happy with it ! There are still quite a few relatively common species occurring in the area that I haven't seen yet. I wonder how many additional records I'd pick up if I made the effort and got into searching for leaf mines ?

Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul,

Well, in our 4th year we managed just nine new species - though we were only recording macros at that time. The nine took our list then to 269. We still get a few new species each year even now, with six in 2017 bringing our total to 669, a few of which are leaf mines from within the garden.

As for leaf-mining adding more species for you ...... I'd reckon on 100 or more, depending on how far you cast your net.

You are probably already aware of it but if not, there's an excellent leaf-mine site at:

Cheers,
Steve
