Not Too Bad Last Night

Post by Greg »

Not Too Bad Last Night:

Morning All,

A reasonable catch of 23 of 17 species at home including NFY Green Carpet, Common Carpet, Heart and Dart,
Waved Umber and two micros Cochylis atricapitana and Nematopogon schwarziellus (please confirm Steve).
Meanwhile at Fenn's Moss chasing the elusive Ruddy Highflier a disappointing night due to the strong cool wind.
Only 10 of 6 species (alas still no Ruddy Highflier).

Greg

Hi Greg,

Nematopogon swammerdamella and N.schwarziellus are the two species we are most likely to catch in our gardens or find in the wider countryside. These are best separated by measuring the wing. The first to emerge is Nematopogon swammerdamella with a wing length of 10mm, followed by the smaller Nematopogon schwarziellus whose wing length is 8mm. Judging wing length on photo's is difficult but I would have gone for Nematopogon swammerdamella.

Regards,
Steve

Hi Steve,

The Nematopogon in question is no more than 8mm in length. But, as the two species are quite common, shall
I leave it off my records if there is any doubt ?

Also is the Cochylis atricapitana OK to record ?

Regards,
Greg

Hi Greg,

If the Nematopogon is only 8mm then it will be N.schwarziellus.

Yes, your Cochylis atricapitana is correct.

Steve
