ID Help Requests - June 2018 - Part 1:

I've figured out most of my moths from June but still a few I'm unclear on. Any help appreciated ! (More to come).

Cheers
Paul

1. Poplar Grey ? - 08/06/2018
1. Poplar Grey ? - 08/06/2018
Haven't had problems distinguishing Knot Grass and Poplar Grey before, but I'm not sure about this one.
2. Unknown - 29/06/2018
2. Unknown - 29/06/2018
I had two Calomotropha paludella the same night, and at first I thought this was one too, but now I see it's not. About the same size, or maybe a bit bigger ? I wondered about Obscure Wainscot.
3. Aleimma loeflingiana ? - 18/06/2018
3. Aleimma loeflingiana ? - 18/06/2018
I get lots of Aleimma loeflingiana, they seem quite variable and I reckon this is probably one - but not 100% sure.
4. Cryptoblabes bistriga ? - 08/06/2018
4. Cryptoblabes bistriga ? - 08/06/2018
Didn't have a clue on this - I asked on a Facebook group and got a suggestion of Cryptoblabes bistriga (from Ben Sale). Pretty lousy photo but hard to see what else it could be ?

Can't place this.
7. Unknown micro 1 (photo 2) - 29/06/2018

Same moth as above.

Can't place this either.

Hi Paul,

With the white marks in the centre of the trailing edge on the forewing, I'd say your first macro is a Knot Grass.
The second looks very similar to the Silky Wainscots I caught at Cors Dyfy recently.

Greg

Hi Paul,

I agree with Greg with Silky Wainscot and Knotgrass.

Thanks Greg and Harry. Silky Wainscot is not something I ever expected to find in my garden!

Photos 6/7 - The dark form of Bud Moth Spilonota ocellana.

Photos 8/9 - Can't make this into anything but Spatalistis bifasciana, even if it does lack the yellow spot on the dorsum. Mike Dale had the first Cheshire record in his Alsager garden in 2016 and has had another two this June. You are certainly finding some good micro's this year Paul.

Photos 3-5 are correct.

Photo 1 - If anyone ever has problems splitting Poplar Grey & Knot Grass then check their hindwings - brilliant white in Poplar Grey and dark in Knot Grass.

Regards,
Steve
