Two new for garden - on the same plant!

Post by SteveH »

Hi folks,

it seems that year ago Marion found a small, self-seeded birch sapling in the front garden and decided to pull it up, pop it in a pot and transfer said pot to the back garden. I had no idea of any of this until I noticed some mines a couple of days ago on what few leaves the plant (now all of 18" tall) has.

So today I had some time to look more closely, found two that were tenanted and amazingly they are of two different species, Stigmella luteella and Stigmella confusella, both new to the garden! We have only previously recorded Stigmella aurella and Stigmella oxycanthella mines in the garden so it was no surprise that they were new really.

Cheers,
Steve
