We have been trying to improve our leaf mine recognition skills and have the following examples which we would like second opinions. ID for.
Number 1 first thoughts Bucculatrix early mine but now think possibly Stigmella perpygmaeella.
Number 2 Mine in Oak found 5th July
Number 3 Mine on oak found 1st August
Number 4 First thought Stigmella basiguttella but don't think that is in our area.
Number 5 Mine on hawthorn Stigmella hybnerella or perpygmaeella
Number 6 as for 5
Number 7 Stigmella hybnerella?
Number 8 Finally found an occupied mine Stigmella crataegella? Bob & Helen

Re: Some leaf mines for confirmation and ID
No.1 looks OK but I always like to find the cocoonet to be sure.
When trying to ID a Stigmella on oak, you need to note position of egg and probably also need to find one which is still tenanted. Even then they are difficult.
No.5 Stigmella hybnerella a slender gallery with narrow margins, changing to blotch feeding. Stigmella perpygmaeella never feeds in a blotch, although the mine often doubles back on itself to form a false blotch but the frass lines are always there.
No.6 is also probably Stigmella hybnerella but No.7 is more typical of Stigmella hybnerella.
No.8 is Stigmella crataegella with the green larva.
Regards
Steve

Re: Some leaf mines for confirmation and ID
Thanks Steve. We've found quite a few Bucculatrix larva on the hawthorn and have bred a couple through even though a concoonet was not found with this mine.
We'll try and locate some occupied oak mines before we go off to Spain for October. Bob & Helen
