Micros needing ID

Post by bobhelencoan »

Good trapping session last night. Three micros we are not if they can be identified or not.
Prays species fraxinella spp rustica?
Caloptilla azaleella? Rather worse for wear.
A tiny little moth. Tischeria ekebladella?
A strange looking case on the underside of an oak leaf. Could it be Coleophora kuehnella?
Plus a Bucculatrix cocoon on an oak leaf.Is it Bucculatrix ulmella?
Any help much appreciated Bob & Helen

Hi Bob & Helen

Your Prays has the orangey brown head of ruficeps. Are the wings completely plain, without any darker markings ? If so then Prays ruficeps.

Agree Azalea Leaf Miner Caloptilia azaleella

Tischeria looks worn, so Coptotriche marginea is also a possibility

Never seen a Coleophora kuehnella case but the photos online do resemble yours. Can you see any signs of feeding on the underside of the leaf ?

Bucculatrix cocoons are ridged like your, so it could be a Bucculatrix

Steve, We have had Prays ruficeps before and this moth has not markings on its wings.
We do still have the tiny moth if that is of any use?
Unfortunately that is the only image we have of the case? on Oak. Don't know why but we did not keep the leaf. I don't think we realised it might be a moth case until we saw the photos.
Thanks for your help. Bob & Helen

No need to save me the Tischeria/Coptotriche as both are easily found in the larval stage.
Doubt I would have realized your find on oak was potentially a Coleophora kuehnella case either. Do try and revisit the site to see if you can find others. There is an old record in SJ88, don't have details to hand, so not sure if that was a case or adult but that is the only county record.
