Noctuid id

Post by mikew »

Could anyone help on this, please?

I have not seen Crescent previously but this is rather worn.

What's the wing length Mike ?
Crescent, assuming it's bigger than a Common Rustic.

Profile picture posted
The moth is larger than all the Common Rustics illustrated in Waring & Townsend with the exception of the one on the extreme right.
Thanks, Mike

Hi Greg and Mike,

This is definitely Crescent based upon shape of kidney mark and hint of thin white lines dropping south off it's inner tip. The wing tip shape is slightly sharper than Common Rustic and there is a fairly straight border between the dark mid-wing and broad paler outer cross-band (slightly wavy border in Common Rustic).

Regards,

John

I agree, I was wondering whether Gold Spangle was a possibility at first, but seeing the profile,
yes Crescent.
