Better Than Expected

Post by melbellingham »

With 79 moths of 19 species last night (07/09/2018) I recorded more than I had expected. It felt cool when I put the trap out, and hadn’t expected much at all.

Nothing NFY, but 3 Old Lady, only my second Turnip Moth of the year, a rather battered Oak Hook-tip and another Vine’s Rustic were all very nice to see.

It was my first trap of September, as I had just returned from a week in Dorset, where it was surprisingly warm. 81 species in 6 nights trapping, many that I don’t record up here in Cheshire, but only 2 species, both micro’s, that were new for me.

One was Mecyna flavalis, the other was Boxworm Moth Cydalima perspectalis with at least 4 different individuals (including the all brown form). If I had a Box Tree, I certainly wouldn’t be unhappy if it was infested by these beauties.

The most common moth was Vine’s Rustic (159) with 41 in one trap. Is this the sign of things to come in Cheshire?

Mel.
