High numbers for December

Post by PaulHopkins »

I was blown away by the quantity of moths in and around the trap this morning. I guess the calm, mild, damp conditions suited them to a t.

72 December Moth
34 Mottled Umber
28 Winter Moth
6 Red-green Carpet
2 Chestnut
2 Brick
1 Satellite
1 Blastobasis lacticolella

I tapped some of them out onto the trap walls for a group photo, but it doesn’t really give a sense of the numbers!

Cheers
Paul

Well Paul,
That is a phenomenal catch for this time of the year, or at any time even.
It was a mild calm damp night here, I expected more but just got a disappointing three moths.
Your garden and the surrounding area must be a very healthy environment.

Well, nothing like the numbers Paul had the previous night, just eight moths but with a migrant Diamond-back Moth and second brood Dark Arches, seven species is still a good December catch.
