Acleris cristana, new for Cheshire

Post by JulianB »

Hi all,

We had an excellent number of moths in the trap this morning (192, by far the highest this year) - although as often with our blacklight Robinson, a third of these were actually on the grass, and all the pugs bar one on the wall.

We had one Pale Pinion (NFG), one Red Sword-grass (new for us, although Steve Hind trapped one here previously), and three Red Chestnuts.

There was only one micro in the trap, but that was a beauty - Acleris cristana, apparently new for Cheshire. Unfortunately the only pictures I have were taken inside a glass pot, as although the moth seemed relaxed, it flew rapidly when tapped out. Steve Hind has kindly confirmed the ID.

This moth has previously been found up to the Midlands, so not too far from Cheshire. It can be hugely variable (check out the range of photos on the Norfolk site), and should have two prominent tufts (likely lost from this individual, who will have overwintered).

Cheers, Julian
