Larva and cases on Alder

Post by Tim_Ward »

There were several larval cases and a larva at the end of an Alder twig in the Goyt Valley this weekend. Is it possible to identify from the attached photos? Could they be a Coleophora species? Your expertise welcome.......
Tim

Hi Tim
Are you sure it's Alder and not Birch ?
The small larva appears to be an early instar of one of the Noctuidae.
The case is most likely Coleophora serratella, although I can't make out the serrated edge from that angle.

Hi Steve,
Apologies.....the leaf is obviously Downy Birch rather than Alder.
I'm not sure exactly how serrated the edge needs to be for C. serratella; does this additional photograph help?

Likewise Tim, I'm never sure exactly how serrated the edge needs to be for C. serratella, so I only record those which are clearly serrated.
