Only have shot from above. Not well-placed for a side shot!

Looked through books twice for no.1 - it looks obvious but cannot find it!

Your second picture is of a Small Fan-footed Wave.

Hi - I'd have a look at Single-dotted Wave as well.

I'll pass on the micro!

Thanks, Julian

They are similar - here's a link to a handy comparison:

http://www.eakringbirds.com/eakringbird ... dotted.htm

The dark patch on the abdomen seems to be important.

We had one a week or so back, which we ID'd as a Single-dotted Wave too. I've attached a copy so others can confirm them both.

Thanks, Julian

Thanks both for your discussion - I think you are right with the Single-dotted Wave. It seems confusing with having more large dark dots.

Hi Julian

This has turned out to be a very confusing issue with me. Non of the Single-dotted Waves I've ever seen have
had the continuous dark band on the outer edge of the wing, some of the Small Fan-footed Waves have.
The Wing shape didn't look right for Single-dotted either.
BUT, the dark markings on the abdomen as pointed out on the link you mentioned
(which isn't mentioned in any of my guides) seems to be an important factor.
Makes me wonder if these two species might cross breed.
Apologies for my abrupt response to your first post, I was convinced I was right.
Thanks for the correction.
I've attached a couple of photos of the two species for comparison.

Regards
Greg

Hi Greg,

I believe your SFFW is dark enough to be assigned the fimbriolata monika :-)

Cheers,
Steve
