Why I don't catch so many Large Yellow Underwing!

Post by andrewjcharlton »

I wondered why I don't catch the spectacular numbers of moths that many people are reporting.
I used to think it was because I run 'home made' traps. But now I know!

Take a look at the videos I recorded last night. These guys were in attendance at my trap almost continuously from 2330 to 0400.

After the birds and wasps have had their share too it's a wonder there is anything left for me to identify by the time I get there...

... I have to get up at stupid-o-clock to minimise the impact the House Sparrow population has on things attracted to my trap too - a necessary evil.

I used to release the catch back in to the garden (well overgrown and not in the least bit manicured) but have stopped that too now - release after birds have gone to roost...bats used to be more of a problem than they currently are.

Cheers,
Steve
