Despite the deluge as we brought the trap in this morning we had quite a good count.
Particularly nice were the Poplar hawkmoth, Elephant hawkmoth and Magpie moth.
New for us was Epiblema foenella and what we think is Aethes rubigana. We also had a nice Eucosma can with shiny golden markings and what we think is a golden rod pug.
Confirmation of the micros would be appreciated. Bob & Helen

Re: some nice micros
Could anyone please confirm the ID of the Aethes species and the pug. We had two more of the Aethes moths last night. Thanks Bob & Helen

Hi Bob & Helen
Golden-rod pug is OK.
I can't help with your Aethes rubigana/cnicana as I don't find photos of that pair easy to ID.
Regards
Steve

Hi Bob & Helen and Steve,
Your moth appears to be rubigana and I've attached a comparative photo. I seem to have picked a particularly yellow cnicanaas an example. The pale yellow wash on rubiganacontrasts with the white of the rest of the wing and the dorsal 'saddle' is broader and blacker than the rustier saddle, narrower saddle of cnicana, the latter species also marginally smaller. Hope the image explains.

I should also have mentioned the dorsal band which widens to a greater extent in rubigana where it reaches the dorsum.

Re: some nice micros
Many thanks John and Steve. We have planted some wild flowers in our garden and one is a burdock so we will need to look out for larva over the winter. Bob & Helen
