Small Cumbrians....

Post by MothNoggin »

I was lucky enough to persuade my sister-in-law to let me run my moth trap while up in Cumbria over the past few days. Needless to say, there were a couple of micros that turned up to puzzle me....
I think the first one is a Stigmella maybe, which probably means it needs dissection?

The second is puzzling me because the band across the mid-wing is continuous and non of the images I've seen seem to match. It has a cool tufty hairdo which seems to put it in Group M in my book, which gives many options!

Any help gratefully received...
Thanks

Hi Nev

Stigmella & Phyllonorycter.

You are best looking for the larval mines of these groups. Most can be identified by the mine or when reared by noting the foodplant.

Many Thanks Steve.
After looking at the UKMoths site I was surprised to see how many Phyllonoryter spp there are :o !!
The closest match from looks alone (not very good I accept) seemed to be Phyllonorycter ulmifoliella.
Thanks again
