The Confusion that is Square-spot Rustic

Post by Greg »

Morning All.

The Square-spot Rustic along with the Ingrailed Clay are two of the most variable species.
Frustratingly they can be mistaken for various other species.
Below are some examples of S-s Rustics. One of which was caught last night at Gowy Meadows.
At first it looked like a possible Neglected Rustic (even though the habitat was wrong).
On closer inspection in the light of day it turned out to be yet another S-s Rustic. (Sorry Steve).

Nice post Greg - certainly highlights the pitfalls associated with varaible species.

No need to be sorry about the (not) Neglected Rustic - we were actually in the dark when first looking at it! Cold light of day brings new thoughts and in the end the ID is correct.

Was a much better night on Gowy than it was at home - nothing new for the year and only Copper Underwing, Flame Carpet and (2) Vine's Rustics to crow about.

Cheers,
Steve
