Autumnal or November?

Post by Drtim55 »

We recently trapped these two moths on two different nights and we wondered if there is any easy way of telling whether they are November or Autumnal? In the books they are very similar.

Autumnal or November 2?
Otherwise we are getting a couple of moths per night if any however, last night we managed a lifer in the Grey Shoulder Knot and the spectacularly marked Satellite.

Hi Tim
The male Autumnal Moth, November Moth and Pale November Moth can be split without dissecting by brushing the scales off the tip of the abdomen on the underside, see field guide, otherwise record as November aggregate, as they cannot be split on wing markings.
