Early Success In 2013

Early Success In 2013:

I've had the trap on during the past couple of nights with the weather being so mild and have been rewarded with 4 Pale Brindled Beauties (Phigalia pilosaria) yesterday and Early Moth (Theria primaria), Dark Chestnut (Conistra ligula) & Caloptilia elongella this morning, my best ever start to a year.

Regards,
Steve

I was surprised to find a Red-green Carpet (Chloroclysta siterata) in the trap this morning (5th January 2013). This has now become a common garden moth with over 200 in my trap some autumns. It does hibernate but I rarely catch it in the spring. Looking through the county records, it usually emerges in March, with sightings through into May. Such a winter sighting is not unprecedented, as in 2011 there were January/February reports from Alsager and two sites near Nantwich.

Hi Steve,

Like yourself I have been putting my trap out on the 'milder' nights, plus every Friday night for the Winter Garden Moth Scheme (GMS), but my catches have been poor by comparison. My only moths of 2013 have been 1 Acleris ferrugana/notana and 2 Light-brown Apple Moths (Epiphyas postvittana) (1 male/1 female). The male was caught on Friday night, and was the first moth I had caught for GMS since 23/11/2012.

2012 fizzled out almost by the end of November, and proved to be my worst year for moths (species and numbers) since 2003, but I did have a Red-green Carpet (Chloroclysta siterata) on 22/12/2012.

Hi Folks,

I've nothing to write about concerning early 2013 success but can pick up on Mel's final sentence regarding 2012.

At home, it was our worst year for species trapped (280) since 2000 and our worst total of individual insects caught (3957) since 1999. Of the 280 species, 92 were represented by the fewest number ever recorded. Interestingly, prior to 2011, which was our best year ever for species trapped, our last really bumper year was 2006, which itself was followed by a very poor 2007. The difference in species caught when comparing 2012 to 2011 is a massive 76.

Cheers,
Steve
