Greater Pipefish (Syngnathus acus)

Post by SteveMcBill »

Greater Pipefish (Syngnathus acus):

Over at Moreton, Wirral on Monday 14th April 2014 waiting for the tide to go out. In a small pool left by the receding tide where the sand meets the sea-defences concrete slope at GR - SJ25849173 I got to find and see my first ever Greater Pipefish (Syngnathus acus) approx. 14 to 15 inches long, which had been trapped when the sea went out. A cracking fish; only ever seen them in aquaria before - see photos below - sadly the water was very cloudy as a small group of dogs out with a couple of people on a walk along the beach had been into the pool attempting to harass the fish and had stirred up some of the slightly muddy substrate.
