Marine Creatures at New Brighton, Wirral - Sunday 11th October 2009:

On Sunday 11th October 2009 a short trip to New Brighton beach added a number of records to the rECOrd database. Especial surprises for me included:

- the green sea anemone (Actinia prasina) on groin rocks at SJ31019451 and SJ30879459.

and

- the blue-grey marine springtail/collembolan (Anurida maritima) in pools at the base of the groin rocks at the same grid reference points.

Both of these species are new species for the rECOrd database. If there are any other marine/coastal recorders who have data for this area (or anywhere around the Wirral (Mersey and/or Dee) then rECOrd would be very grateful to receive copies of the information.

For excellent photographs of these species please see over at:

Other species recorded included: Ensis siliqua; Phorus legumen; Lanice conchilega; Spisula solida; Barnea candida; Donax vittatus; Ulva lactuca; Mactra stultorum; Macoma balthica; Porphyra umbilicus and Fucus vesiculosus.
