WATER VOLE TRAINING.

Post by anno »

‘Saltscape’ is the unique landscape modified by industry, stretching from Frodsham to Middlewich and Winsford and taking in the River Weaver and the Trent and Mersey Canal. This includes the built environment and unique flora and fauna more associated to coastal and limestone habitats.
As a introduction to the scheme we are piloting a survey with Cheshire Wildlife Trust, to discover if Water Voles still inhabit the local waterways, with a view to management to improve local sites to encourage re–colonisation.
The Water Vole is Britain's fastest declining wild mammal and has disappeared from many parts of the country where it was once common. Threatened by habitat loss, it has also suffered predation by the American Mink.
Anthony Brandreth, Saltscape Development Officer said:
‘By improving riverbank habitats, and monitoring populations we can make sure that the Wind in The Willows character ‘Ratty’ is seen on the Saltscape in the future, and improve these areas for wildlife in general’
Councillor Brian Clarke said:
‘As a local councillor and keen angler this is a step in the right direction, a chance to get involved at ‘grass roots’ level in community volunteering, to secure a future for the management of the landscape and the waterways around us.
The Saltscape scheme gives an opportunity for local people to make a difference, with lots more to come!’
