Is this Brown Alderfly (Sialis lutaria) ?
Hi All,
This is one of a pair of species that are quite similar so need confirmation before sending record into RODIS.
Cheers,
Harry

Re: Is this Brown Alderfly (Sialis lutaria) ?
Hi Harry,
There are 3 species of Alder Fly:
1) Sialis fuliginosa
2) Sialis lutaria
3) Sialis nigripes
In rECOrd's database there are 3 records of S.fuliginosa and 231 records of S.lutaria - (0 records of S.nigripes).
In order to distinguish the three species of Sialis, examination of the external genitalia (males) or anal plates (females) is required, but is relatively easy as no dissection is required. Sadly, I can no longer find a working link to the key provided by Colin Plant on the Net.
Cheers,
Steve
