National Insect Week - 2010

National Insect Week - 2010:

National Insect Week this year takes place from 21st – 27th June 2010. During that week, on the NBN website (http://www.nbn.org.uk/) and at hundreds of local events around the UK, you will have the chance to “Discover Diversity in the World of Insects”. National Insect Week is organised by the Royal Entomological Society, supported by a large number of partner organisations, including the NBN, concerned with many aspects of insect science, natural history and biodiversity.

Through NIW2010 activities and events, you can explore insect diversity in its many aspects – the wide range of body shapes and colours, the incredible variety of species (over 24,000 in the UK alone), the amazingly different behaviours and ways of life of these species, and the multitude of interactions of insects with their environment and with humans. NIW2010 is the Royal Entomological Society’s contribution to the UK’s ‘Biodiversity is life’ partnership celebrating the International Year of Biodiversity 2010.

Biodiversity isn’t just about wildlife in exotic locations. Take part in NIW2010 and find out that insect diversity is just as relevant and fascinating to explore in your garden or local countryside in the UK as it is in the savannahs, deserts, wetlands and rainforests of the tropics. Even better, why not contribute to NIW2010 by running an event yourself during the Week? Visit the NIW website (http://www.nationalinsectweek.co.uk/) for more details.
