Garden BioBlitz - 2016

Post by SteveMcBill »

Garden BioBlitz - 2016:

Hello,

It's time to BioBlitz !

This year’s Garden BioBlitz is taking place this weekend, 4–5th June 2016, and we’d love as many people as possible to take part !

Gardens are about the most under-recorded habitat in the country, so what you find in your garden over the weekend will be adding something new to the national picture. It doesn’t matter if your garden is large or small, urban or rural, there will be wildlife in it. And, it’s also a great way to engage kids, who can get down on their hands and knees and see the wildlife in their garden from a whole new angle.

Before you do your Garden BioBlitz:

If you're not sure where to begin, why not check out the "How to take part" page on our website, where you can print off a Top 20 species to find tick sheet. You could even use this as a wildlife treasure hunt for kids taking part.
How long you record for and how much you record is up to you – we’re interested in each and every sighting. The main thing is to enjoy nature, have fun and hopefully learn something new !

If you want help identifying the species you find, set yourself up with free account on the Open University's iSpot website or tweet us photos @gardenbioblitz using the hashtag #gbb16 and we’ll do our best to help.

Your BioBlitz results:

We’d love you to submit your results so that they can go towards a national species database and help scientists and conservationists build a better picture of garden wildlife around the country. To do this, set up an account (again, completely free !) on the iRecord website and upload your sightings, which will later be verified by experts.
This year, you can also upload your sightings to the new iRecord app ! You will need to join up for the Garden Bioblitz on iRecord first, and then select the Garden Bioblitz from the activities list in the app. You can find out more here.

And, don’t forget that we’d also love to see your photos and hear your stories ! The Garden BioBlitz team, along with other amateur and professional wildlife experts, will be monitoring Twitter and iSpot over the weekend (when we’re not outside doing our own bioblitzes), so do tweet us your photos and let us know how you’re getting on.
Over the weekend and for the next few weeks there will be updates on our Info Centre webpage, giving details of the number of species recorded so far, plus the species that are being seen most often across the country. So do keep checking back if you’d like to know what has been seen !

If you have any questions just let us know.
Happy BioBlitzing !

PS: Do you know anyone who'd like to take part in the Garden BioBlitz ? If you do then please tweet about it with the hashtag #gbb16, or you could add the link to your Facebook profile or email it to friends, colleagues or family. The Garden BioBlitz is open to everyone, so it would be fantastic if you could help spread the word. Thank you.

The GardenBioBlitz is run by a small team of passionate volunteers:
