Breeding Common Frogs (Rana temporaria)

Post by SusanMcM »

I saw the first pair of frogs in cop in the garden pond (Woolton, Liverpool) on 14th February this year (2009). Last year it was 8th February (2009)with the first spawn on 2nd March.

Has anyone any earlier sightings this year?

;) Susan

Following my last post, the first spawn was laid 16th March 2009 which is a fortnight later than last year. ;)

Breeding Common Frogs (Rana temporaria) - 2011:

After such a harsh winter, which resulted in me fishing out 32 dead frogs, I heard a male frog croaking tonight to call a female to the pond. I do hope there are some out there to answer his call. I also saw a newt in the pond (via torchlight) so hopefully I will have an active pond again this year.

I am thinking of relocating the pond by about 3 ft towards the right of this photo because the plants are too close (including a 18ft conifer) and the quantity of leaves falling into the pond is more than I can scoop out each day. Now that the 'wildlife' has returned for spring breeding I will have to wait until Autumn before I can do any work.

Irene :o

PS: this is my first post so please excuse any mistakes.

Common Frogs (Rana temporaria) - 2012:

4 Common Frogs (Rana temporaria) today (29th February 2012) in the garden pond in Priory Close, Halton Village, Runcorn, Cheshire. The start of another year of recording.

Anybody else with frogs in their garden ponds or local ponds and ditches. Anybody with any spawn as yet ??? Anybody seen any toads and/or toad spawn ??

Steve
