Blue Lily Type:

Hello all, please find a few images of a conspicuous plant found in Maen Achwyfan, near Holywell. It was found in the middle of a field by Martyn, a volunteer at RECORD.

By chance, rather than skill, I seem to have identified this as Camassia leichtlinii a native of the North American plains, so I probably have it wrong, but it is quite distinctive.

Could I ask whether this is now establishing over here or is it just an escape ? I note from the NBN interactive map that this species is only noted in one 10km square in the UK (ST63), is this really a true representation ?

Any assistance or comment would be very welcome.

Camassia quamash is another very similar species often cultivated, but I do not know how to distinguish them !

It certainly looks like the Quamash, Small Camas or the Camas Lily - for info on this species see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camassia_quamash.

But as Graeme says - I don't know how to separate it from its congeners.

I've found a key elsewhere, only with C.quamash and C.leichtenii in though - the first grows 1-2 ft.; the second (the Great Quamash) grows 3-4 ft. See here: http://www.nwvisualplantid.com/camas-gr ... ichtlinii/.
