Altica on Rosebay

Post by stevehind »

Altica on Rosebay:

I found what I think is an Altica sp. beetle yesterday on Rosebay Willowherb at Kerridge Hill.

Is it possible to identify it from these photos?

Regards,
Steve

The genus Altica is a tricky one but there are two likely candidates from Epilobium - A.lythri and A.oleracea. It's too difficult to tell which from these photographs. To be sure it's best to get a male, extract the aedeagus and compare with images at: http://culex.biol.uni.wroc.pl/cassidae/ ... altica.htm.

I would expect it to be A.lythri, but only because it seems to be more common.

Cheers,
Don
