Workshop on the larvae of British Coleoptera: Saturday 6th December

Dear All,

As you may know the Larval Handbook to British Coleoptera has had a long pupation. Begun in the 70s by Peter Hammond and Jane Marshall, based on manuscripts and the collections of Fritz van Emden, it was considerably modernised and brought up to date by Mike Cox, and recently the manuscripts and figures were again modified and brought up to date, including by addition of colour photos, by Beulah Garner and I (Max Barclay).

It is proposed to submit this work, which is the culmination of a lot of work over many years by many people, as a multi-authored Royal Entomological Society handbook, preferably in the next months.

Entomologists who are interested in the larvae of British Coleoptera are invited to a workshop to at the Natural History Museum on Saturday 6th December 2014, when the manuscript keys will be made available alongside specimens, for testing. You are invited to bring along your own specimens of larvae for keying if you wish.

Anyone wishing to take part in this process is invited to contact Beulah Garner and myself by emailing: and/or

The space is limited to 20 people and will be on a first emailed, first served basis so please indicate your interest as soon as possible

Place: AMC workshop space, NHM.
Time: 11am for 11.30 start (entrance through main Museum entrance; sign in at main desk to left of entrance and proceed to AMC)
