Apion frumentarium - Needs Confirmation

Apion frumentarium - Needs Confirmation:

Hi All,

This tiny(c3mm )seed weevil recorded at Burton Mere Wetlands RSPB on April 27th 2015. On a cold mainly overcast day this red weevil came out in the brief sunshine. It was found on Broad-leaved Dock (Rumex obtusifolius) on the upper leaf surface. The shape of head and pronotum as well as the completely punctate head suggests to me Apion frumentarium rather than A.cruentatum. As I am not an expert on Coleoptera (or anything else for that matter) I would like confirmation as to its true identity before sending in the record.

Cheers
H

Hello 'H',

I think your ID is likely to be correct.

Unfortunately the photograph is not of sufficient quality or at the right angle to show the features you describe.
However, if it has a completely punctate head, long head, and a distinct median stria in the pronotum base, it will be A.frumentarium. It's the commonest species in my experience.

Cheers,
Don
