Weevils

Post by bankst »

Weevils:

Found a couple of adult weevils today on the outside of the office windows at Picow Farm Depot in Runcorn. Not being a coleopterist, and being a gardener, I instantly thought "Vine Weevils (Otiorhynchus sulcatus), little buggers !". But, on closer inspection they looked a little smaller and paler than the familiar gardener's friend. Any ID suggestions ?

Cheers,
Tom Banks.

Hello Tom,

Glad to see a post - we haven't had one for a bit.

The weevil is Phyllobius pyri (L,1758). A common species that's polyphagous like lots of other species in the genus. A distinguishing feature is the blade like edges to the mid and hind legs.

Cheers,
Don

Thanks Don.

I'd better amend 'Vine weevil' on RODIS before Steve finds out !

Cheers,
Tom.
