mixed bag some needing ID

Post by bobhelencoan »

We have had a couple of hatching we need some help with.
Celypha lacuana ? from a spinning in hawthorn.
Agonoterix heracliana ? hatched from a larva found on cow parsley. Does it still need to be recorded ad agg?
A leaf fold on sycamore with a black pupa protruding but on opening no frass. Was this phyllonorycter geniculella or caloptilia rufipennella?
We managed a reason photo of six-belted clearwing at the meeting last Saturday at Northwich and also photographed a larva which we think is 5 spotted burnet from images on the web.
Help, comments appreciated Bob & Helen

Hi Bob & Helen

Larva of Agonopterix ciliella has a black/brown head with dark markings on the prothoracic plate. See the photos at http://www.lepiforum.de/lepiwiki.pl?Ago ... x_Ciliella
So your Agonoterix heracliana is a good record, as the larva has a pale head.

The fold on sycamore could be Caloptilia rufipennella, although that is normally more of a cone. Try and find the mine to be sure.

The Celypha lacuana larva appears too pale for that species and I can't make out enough detail from the photo of the adult to be able to suggest an ID.

Have been looking at a lot of micros recently. Wondered if the adult that hatched could be a dark version of a bud moth. The larvae might not be a final stage larva but seems to some of the characteristics. Bob & Helen
