Yellow Underwing

Post by mikegriffiths »

Hi all,

I am a data inputter at rECOrd and have a query about the use of "Yellow Underwing" as a species in a recorders folder.

The issue is that "Yellow Underwing" doesn't register as a species, both in RODIS and UK Moths, but the recorder who has submitted the data, uses separate prefixes for various other Yellow Underwing species.

YUW= Yellow Underwing.
LYUW= LargeYellow Underwing - he also identifies Least and Lesser as separate species.

Any suggestions?

Mike,

My own take on this would be that the records identified merely as YUW would have to be left out and NOT entered into RODIS in any form. As the recorder has not identified them to species any entry you made would be purely a 'guess' and that would not be at all helpful in terms of the accuracy or usefulness of the data.

If I had been 'forced' to make a decision I would probably have said they were Large Yellow Underwings BUT and it is a BIG BUT - as he has also used LYUW for Large Yellow Underwings I am at a complete loss as to what the YUW designation could be referring to.

Sorry, but my shout would be "leave then OUT" !

Cheers.

Steve

P.S.: I assume it is J.R.'s data ?? If it is John's then Eric or Luck (or yourself) could ring him and ask him directly !!

Thanks Steve,

We are hoping to meet the recorder in the next couple of weeks and hope to clear up the situation. We have left these records out for the moment but I was interested to know if this confusion is a well known one. Will keep you posted.
