Galls On Turkey Oaks (Quercus cerris):

Took the grandkids to the park this afternoon (25th October 2013) and went to Calderstones Park, Yewtree Road, Liverpool. Near the Boating Lake (SJ40818723) was a Turkey Oak (Quercus cerris) and on the small branches we noticed a reasonable number of galls which at first looked like Marble Galls (Andricus kollari) but on closer inspection were quite different. Finally tracked these down as galls of Aphelonyx cerricola - very pleased with them altogether. Seems they were first recorded in the UK in 1997.

If any recorders in Cheshire know of Turkey Oaks near to them (or at specific sites) it would seem that NOW (25th October 2013) is the time to check them and perhaps find the first records of this gall causer for Cheshire. Good luck.
