Species identification help

Hi there,
I was doing a torch survey in Warrington (in a reedbed near a canal) and came across a species which I am having difficulty identifying. I unfortunately could not get a picture but it looked like a small or juvenile crayfish. It appeared to be black in the torch light. I am very unsure as I wasn't really expecting crayfish in this type of environment but I couldn't think of anything else it could have been. It was about an inch long.
Can anyone help?
