Grasshopper at Burton Mere 1st November 2014:

Had this grasshopper at Burton Mere on 1st November 2014. Had a look in the books i have but I failed to ID it. Can anyone help please. I am new to this forum so apologies if this is a common species that i should really know.

Thank you,

Hi Roger,

As you are aware Cheshire doesn't have a large number of Ornithoptera species and of course even fewer grasshoppers. It's usually is a matter of separating Meadow from Field Grasshopper. The Common Green Grasshopper being anything but common here and Mottled Grasshopper likes heaths such as Thurstaston Common.

Your specimen looks good for Field Grasshopper (Chorthippus brunneus). It can be told apart from Meadow Grasshopper by having a costal bulge on its wing (just about detectable in your photo). Also the pronotum side keels are angled not straight as in Meadow Grasshopper. Although I was unable to see it in your photo but the underside of the thorax should be hairy.

Hope this helps,
Harry

Thanks Harry for your help on this. I hadn't realised how few grasshoppers there were locally.

Best wishes,
Rog
