Any clues on what my wasp/bee could be?

Any clues on what my wasp/bee could be?

Have just had a visitor in our conservatory that has completely stumped me. Unfortunately it didn't stick around long enough or stay still long enough for a photo, typical! It was about common wasp size but instead of black and yellow stripes it was primarily black with a white mid section, and some white also on it's wings. It was probably fatter than a wasp, and hairier, a bit like a bumble bee but not as big.

I've looked at a few sites for a picture of something that looks similar and can't find anything. I have definitely never seen anything like it before and wish I could have caught it, although wasn't sure if it might bite or sting so didn't want to get too close.

Anyone have any suggestions of what pictures to look at for a possible ID?

A very wild guess here: - try the Honeysuckle Sawfly (Zaraea fasciata) and see if that is anything like it at all !!

Cheers.

Please see Anthony's email below. The other pictures are posted in the relevant forum areas.

Hi Tom,

Here are pics of the insects I saw in Inverie last month. Amongst them, I'm told, are pics of a wood wasp and emperor moth caterpillar. The young bug - well...

Have been researching my wood wasp on the internet, and come up with Rhyssa persuasoria, variously called Wood Wasp Ichneumon, Giant Ichneumon Wasp, Sabre Wasp.
