Crab Grass

Can anyone help ID this grass?

This was find outside Oxfam in Northwich and was sent to me by Anthony from Vale Royal Environmental Network.

He has identified it as Crab Grass, can anyone confirm this?

Common names include crabgrass, finger-grass, and fonio.

If it is, it is the first record for Cheshire. The last record on our system is from 1976, but is from Glossop.

Thanks for your help

Hannah ;)

Hi Hannah,

This is likely to be Crab-grass or Hairy Finger-grass (Digitaria sanguinalis) but there are several other similar grasses. I have 2 other records for it from Middlewich and Chadkirk both in 2009, but as you have a 1976 record, it would not be NEW to Cheshire anyway. The photos look just like the Chadkirk site. I don't suppose it is possible to send me a specimen for verification? A Map ref or tetrad would be useful as Northwich covers several tetrads.

Oct 6th I have now seen the plant and confirmed Digitaria sanguinalis.

Cheers.

Graeme
P.S.: The Echinochloa looks OK but there are others as usual! E. crus-galli is the one that usually occurs. (36 records)

Thanks for confirming this Graeme.

I will make sure this record gets onto the database.

Thanks again
