Sprawler (Asteroscopus sphinx):

Trapped in my Handbridge garden last Thursday night (02/11/2017).
Overlooked it for a Blair's Shoulder-knot at first.
Just shows its still worth putting the trap out.

Kevin.

Hi Kevin,

Definitely worth putting the trap out, if there's a chance of catching a Sprawler.
A moth that's proving very elusive for me.
Nice photo too.

Greg

Hi Kevin,

Excellent record ...... there were just two in 2016 and then only one in 2014 so its a rare beast indeed within Cheshire. As far as I can tell its only the 32nd ever and just the 11th since 2000.

Certainly going to be within the pages of the Annual Report so being able to use one of the photos would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Steve

Sprawler appears to be restricted to SW Cheshire, or at least that's the only part of the county where it has ever been found, although, as it's flight period is so late, it may be present elsewhere.

Steve

Members might be interested to see how the records of Sprawler (Asteroscopus sphinx) correlate in North Wales where it seems to have an Eastern bias linking the population up to the records in West Cheshire.
